Cycling Around Mount Fuji

Note that this photo is a posed shot. You are supposed to cycling anti-clockwise around the lake! Haha If you are deciding between taking the train to Kawaguchiko or driving, you can check out the car rental prices at   https://www.nipponrentacar.co.jp/english/user-guide/reservations.html   and train prices at   http://www.hyperdia.com/ It depends on whether you’re staying overnight at Kawaguchiko and the number of people travelling. Remember to add toll fees of about ¥4200 one way. We decided to rent a car but forgot about the toll fees so it ended up being more expensive. I’d say if you’re staying for one night and there are at least 3 of you, renting a car is a good option. If there are two of you and you want more freedom to move around (such as going to neighbouring places like Oshino Hakkai, Chureito Pagoda, Yamanakako etc) it is also better to rent a car. You should also be warned that traffic is congested upon leaving and arriving at Tokyo. We parked our car at ou...

Izu Hokkawa: Bousui Ryokan

Izu is in Shizuoka prefecture, a quiet and rather understated travel destination mainly frequented by locals. Shizuoka is reputed for its verdant tea fields, luxurious Shizuoka crown melon and fresh wasabi.
We decided to rent a car for our 3D2N trip to Izu Atagawa after calculating the cost of train tickets and factoring in the number transfers. We were very glad we did that because we were able to explore so much more in a short amount of time due to the convenience of having our own transport. Otherwise, you will be restricted public bus schedules.

Ryokan: Bousui ryokan
Useful transportation site if you are not driving: http://www.hyperdia.com/en/

Bousui is a ryokan that boasts sea view and the view from the lobby at level 8 is really impressive. However, since the rooms are at lower levels, do manage your expectations before entering your room.

Welcome refreshment

The service was impeccable with staff speaking fluent English and Mandarin so it’s very convenient for foreign visitors. The meals were amazing and throughout our stay, we were stuffed with good food and free services such as bottled deep sea water, Japanese desserts, fruits, sweets etc.

Complimentary deep sea water

時の音 Toki no ne relaxing area

Dinner on first night: appetiser

Sashimi

踊りアワビ Odori awabi, dancing abalone. I didn't know that they serve this. It's so cruel. Basically the abalone is alive and they put it on a hotplate with a cover to be grilled-steamed =(

Grilled fish

Amazing Izu lobster and oyster soup

chopstick rests that double up as tiny vases

Fruit
Breakfast after first night

Toasted seaweed that tastes great with miso soup

Dinner on second night: More abalone, this time they cooked it first, after seeing my reaction the night before

Sashimi

The lady brought in an entire wasabi and grated it in front of us. I know there is an abundance of wasabi in Izu but this just blew my mind.

Grilled fish

Shabu shabu

Tempura

Very delicious rice flavoured with veggies and abalone

Dessert

Breakfast after second night. I cleared every dish except the udon (I prefer the rice).

Located along the Moon Road, you should be able to see the moon very clearly in some months. You can also see sunrise every day (if it’s not cloudy) and the ryokan offers a Hinode 日の出 sunrise call if you request.

Sunrise from our room at about 0645

There are 4 private bath gazebos
波まくら Namimakura, 日のなごり Hi no nagori, 浮舟 Ukifune and Sazanami さざ波. 波まくら Namimakura and 日のなごり Hi no nagori have resting areas while 浮舟 Ukifune and Sazanami さざ波 have a sauna each. The tub at Sazanami さざ波 has jacuzzi. Our plan entitled us to 50 min of private gazebo bath per day. I had thought we will only be able to use it twice but they offered it to us on the last morning before check out too. Hence, during our 3D2N stay, we tried 3 our if the 4 private bath gazebos namely 波まくら Namimakura, 浮舟Ukifune and Sazanamiさざ波. Our favourite was 波まくらNamimakura because of it’s spacious interior with a resting area. The ones with sauna have no resting area.
