Cycling Around Mount Fuji

Note that this photo is a posed shot. You are supposed to cycling anti-clockwise around the lake! Haha If you are deciding between taking the train to Kawaguchiko or driving, you can check out the car rental prices at   https://www.nipponrentacar.co.jp/english/user-guide/reservations.html   and train prices at   http://www.hyperdia.com/ It depends on whether you’re staying overnight at Kawaguchiko and the number of people travelling. Remember to add toll fees of about ¥4200 one way. We decided to rent a car but forgot about the toll fees so it ended up being more expensive. I’d say if you’re staying for one night and there are at least 3 of you, renting a car is a good option. If there are two of you and you want more freedom to move around (such as going to neighbouring places like Oshino Hakkai, Chureito Pagoda, Yamanakako etc) it is also better to rent a car. You should also be warned that traffic is congested upon leaving and arriving at Tokyo. We parked our car at ou...

Japan Dec 2012 Day 8: Nachi-Katsuura, Wakayama

After depositing our baggage in the coin lockers at Kii-Katsuura 紀伊勝浦station (JPY600 each), about 1 hr 20 mins from Shirahama on the JR Kuroshio train, we boarded the public bus to tour the Nachisan 那智山 area. Our first stop was the Nachi falls 那智の滝, supposedly the tallest in Japan. There was a very friendly and helpful old man at the entrance of the falls who showed us the walking route and a place we could go for lunch =)

Then we walked up a long flight of stairs to Kumano Nachi Shrine 熊野那智大社, one of the 3 major shrines on the Kumano kodo 熊野古道, and Sanjyunotou 三重塔 before walking down a very difficult, albeit downwards, Kumano kodo to Daimozaka 大門坂. The steps are very uneven so going downwards may be more difficult than upwards. It took us at least 45 mins to finish the path.

We just missed the 15:06 bus so the next bus was 15:51 and I was really freaking out because if we can’t get a bus back and it starts to get dark, we’d be in deep trouble hahaha but thankfully, the bus came and we got back to Nakanoshima 中の島, our ryokan, in time for a soak in the very scenic rotenburo and a fulfilling dinner =)
